There are many grocery store chains in Iceland but their pricing varies more than their inventory. Because of this overlap in products and little to no justification for major price differences, it is wise to choose the inexpensive option.
There are for example only two producers of milk in the country. Don’t let that discourage you, because the quality is fantastic.
Seeing as there isn’t a difference in quality due to the limited manufacturers we will be looking through the lens of pricing.
Some stores will charge up to 40 and even 60 percent more than another store a 3-minute drive away.
Spend less money on trivial things and more on that awesome fun stuff!
Iceland is known for its high prices this is how to avoid them as best you can
Stores Ranked by Pricing
(number 1 is best)
1: Bónus
This is where most Icelanders shop, on average they have the lowest prices year after year. Icelanders know this by trial and error and it is verified yearly with price research
Look for the Pink Piggy
2. Krónan
Second best prices, lots of variety and many big stores. A great place to shop.
Look for the yellow smiley coin
TIP: Foreigners sometimes complain that stores close early, the same chain might have different hours for different stores. Consult Google Maps for opening times.
3. Nettó
A wide range of quality products plus the normal ones at a slightly higher rate.
4. Iceland
The stores are either open 24/7 or close at midnight
The stores are only in the Capital Area
I'm still amazed the name doesn't go against some regulation.
5. Hagkaup
We are getting a more expensive, wider range of foreign products typically.
6. All the other ones
They might be your cozy neighborhood stores but they don't have the lowest prices in town, except maybe if you're in the countryside and it's the only store.
TIP: Stock up on essentials whenever you pass one of the stores shown below
