Updated: Apr 28, 2023

Iceland Tips:

  1. Credit Cards: As a general rule you can pay with a card everywhere! But it is smart to get some Icelandic Krónur in case of emergency, go to any bank to get some cash.

  2. Plan ahead: Iceland is a popular tourist destination, so it's important to plan your trip in advance, especially during peak season (June to August). Book accommodations, tours, and activities in advance to avoid disappointment.

  3. Rent a car: Renting a car is the best way to explore Iceland's natural wonders at your own pace. The roads are generally in good condition but be prepared for some rough terrain if you venture off the beaten path.

  4. Dress for the weather: Iceland's weather is notoriously unpredictable, so be sure to pack for all kinds of weather conditions, even in the summer. Layers are key, and waterproof clothing is a must. I was sunbathing 2 days ago and now everything is covered in snow!

  5. Bring a reusable water bottle: Iceland has some of the cleanest water in the world, so be sure to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up from the tap and many natural springs and streams. Icelandic tap water is filtered spring water from the ground, nobody in Iceland is dumb enough to buy water in a bottle. There is only one kind of bottled water and it's for the tourists.

  6. Respect the environment: Iceland's natural beauty is one of its biggest draws, so be sure to respect the environment by staying on designated trails and not disturbing wildlife. And don't forget to pack out your trash!

  7. Tipping: It's not a part of Icelandic culture and is not a requirement, but it does make it that extra more special if you do

  8. English: Everyone speaks it as a second language, you will even find 10-year-olds that are fluent.

  9. Try the local cuisine: Iceland has a unique cuisine that's worth trying. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, like lamb, seafood, and Skyr (a type of yogurt).

  10. Transmission: Most cars are manual in Iceland. So double-check with your car rental if you need an automatic

  11. Safety: Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world, so you don't ever have to worry about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  12. Don't forget the midnight sun: If you're traveling to Iceland in the summer, be prepared for the midnight sun, when the sun never sets. It's a unique experience that's worth staying up for! Bring a sleep mask for when it's time for some shut-eye.

  13. Check road conditions: Before setting out on a drive, be sure to check road conditions on the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration website. Some roads may be closed due to weather or other conditions. Here's a short and simple guide
